Education Trends in Taiwan

Taiwan witnessed a number of reforms to its educational system in 2001. A number of the island's vocational schools were upgraded to four-year colleges, and several well-known colleges merged together. Consequently, local enrollment is expected to increase in upcoming years.

Percent of Undergraduates Remains Same

Fewer undergraduates were expected to study in the United States in 2001, because of the increase in local educational opportunities. This didn't happen, according to contact records from IEF's American College Information Center (ACIC) in Taipei.

The percentage of graduate students versus undergraduate students in the United States remained about the same in 2001, despite the new educational reforms. Approximately 65 percent were graduate students, 35 percent were undergraduate students. Taiwan is the world's fifth leading provider of students to the US. Approximately 28,566 students were enrolled in US colleges and universities, according to IIE's 2001 Open Doors Report.

Increased Demand for Visitor Visas

Last year, IEF's ACIC met with nearly 35,000 Taiwanese students via personal counseling sessions; school visits; student orientation programs; American Education Fairs; and monthly seminars at public libraries. Based on these meetings, ACIC forecasts an increased demand for overseas language and summer training programs in 2002. It expects that more Taiwanese students will be seeking visitor visas than F-1 visas.

US Loses Share of Students

Unfortunately, competition from the British, Australians, and Canadians for these students continues to grow stronger. With financial support from their governments, the British and Australians have staged elaborate recruitment fairs. As a result, the US share of students from Taiwan is now approximately 51.6 percent. Ten years ago, it was 94 percent. Other countries, including Switzerland, France, Germany, and Japan have also increased their recruitment efforts in Taiwan with education fairs, seminars, and other promotional activities.
