Ewha
University in Korea
More than 45 interpreters from the distinguished Ewha Womans University in Korea provided expert translation service to US school representatives at IEF's Fall 2001 American Education Fair in Seoul. These Ewha students helped facilitate verbal and written communications between US schools and Korean students and parents.
During the fall fair, US school representatives also were invited to meet with international advisers from Ewha. The US-Korean group discussed possible student exchange programs and educational partnerships between their schools. Due to the success of this program, Ewha University will participate in IEF's Spring 2002 American Education Fair in Seoul.
Largest Women's University in World
US academic institutions looking to strengthen ties to renowned Korean universities should look closely at Ewha Womans University. With 14 colleges and nine graduate schools serving over 17,000 students, Ewha is currently the world's largest women's university.
The name "Ewha" means "pear blossoms," and the original campus was said to be near a grove of flowering pear trees. Although the university began as a boarding school for elementary-aged girls in 1886, it later became Korea's first accredited university in 1946. Today, the university is well-known for its innovative international programs.
Ewha's development plan calls for expanding the university's mission overseas during the first decade of the 21st century. By the year 2010, Ewha hopes to recruit between 10 - 20 percent of its undergraduate class from overseas and to expand its student and faculty exchange programs. New scholarships, campus facilities, graduate programs and courses are currently being developed to further this goal. Specific fields targeted for strategic development include international studies, translation and interpretation, multimedia, color design, and life sciences.
Perhaps one of Ewha's greatest achievements has been to encourage an egalitarian society where opportunity and success are determined more by talent and character than by gender.
