Taiwan Lifts Restrictions with China

Reversing a long-term government policy, Taiwan has lifted restrictions on direct trade and banking issues with China, according to a recent Taipei Times report.

Experts believe that lifting these restrictions is just one example of how the Taiwanese government is slowly opening trade relations with China step by step. Currently Taiwan imports nearly 8 thousand industrial and agricultural products from China. This is about 70 percent of China's export products.

The relationship between the two long-term adversaries does appear to be improving. It is believed that Taiwan is making these unilateral moves as a way to slowly strengthen relations with China, without having to repeat the political mantra "one China," as requested by Beijing. In many ways, the moves are symbolic. Taiwanese businesses have long been able to circumvent the bans, with the notable exception of air connections.

Taiwan is currently the fifth largest nation providing students to the United States. Due to increased global competition, the US share of students from Taiwan has dropped 40 percent in ten years.
