Taiwan's
Ambitious E-Development Plan
Taiwan has unveiled an ambitious six-year national e-development program aimed at turning the island into a "green silicon island," reported the Taipei Times recently.
The e-Taiwan Project is expected to create 20,000 new jobs, and cost NT$2.6 trillion (roughly US$ 76.5 billion). The idea is based on similar programs in the United States, Japan, UK, Singapore and South Korea.
One component of the program is an NT$36.63 billion plan (approximately US$ 1.07 billion) to transform their paper-driven government into an online, user-friendly format. The electronic system will make it easier for the public to pay taxes, apply for documents and get official information, according to the newspaper. More than 600 kinds of documents will become paperless in the e-Government project.
Another e-Taiwan program is "ez-Life." This film project will encourage the production of digital motion pictures portraying a "Taiwan spirit." Currently, most digital products are completely Western in content, according to Government Information Office (GIO) officials.
Peggy Chou of GIO's department of Motion Picture Affairs was quoted as saying, "We hope to see our own culture being portrayed in entertainment products."
