Lexicon: "Teacher" in Mandarin

The Chinese word for "teacher" reveals much about the country's view of education and instructors.

The word is pronounced "Jiao Shi" in Mandarin Chinese. Jiao means "instruction." Shi means "master" or "specialist."

Jiao Shi -- or "instruction master" -- shows the Asian desire to actively engage youth in learning. It also indicates the importance of the teacher's position in Confucian societies. In Ancient China, the reverence shown to a teacher is superseded only by one's emperor and parents.
