TAIWAN'S UNIQUE WAY TO TEACH ENGLISH

In Taiwan, learning English is considered highly important. One way the government is teaching citizens the language might surprise you.

Garbage trucks in the city of Tainan are broadcasting conversational English phrases to announce their arrival, according to a recent article in Language Magazine. As the trucks approach, residents will hear phrases such as "How much does a pound of cabbage cost." Previously, the trucks played Beethoven music to get people to put out their trash.

The initiative is designed to help create an all-English environment conducive to learning the language, said city education officials.

Taiwan's government has expressed concern that citizens may be lagging behind other Asians in learning English. Recently, officials debated whether to make English a second official language.

Taiwan is the fifth largest source of international students in the United States, and many Taiwanese government officials and business leaders were educated in this country. In recent years, however, the US has lost considerable market share of these students to other nations such as Britain, Australia, Japan and Germany.
