Pre-Event Orientation

Ms. Rebecca Lee of AIEF’s Los Angeles office conducted a pre-event orientation at the Hua Ting Hotel and Towers at 9:00 AM on Sunday, April 6, 2008. Ms. Lee noted that promotional activities prior to the recruitment event included posters and flyers distribution, Internet chat and BBS, news on Internet and in newspapers, seminars on campuses, and outreach programs through campus ambassadors. The event received strong support from the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and from Mr. Feng Xu, Executive Director for educational exchanges.

China Student Recruitment Market & Shanghai Visa Statistics

During the orientation, Ms. Lee provided statistics from IIE’s 2007 “Open Doors” report revealing that there were 67,723 students from China studying in the United States in 2007, marking an 8% increase over the previous year. Out of this total number, 14.7 percent students were enrolled at the undergraduate level, 70.8% at the graduate level, 10.6% participated in other programs, and 3.8% were engaged in optional practical training. China is the second-leading source of international students in the United States, said Ms. Lee.

According to data from the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai, the visa issuance rate as of Sept. 30, 2007, exceeded 88% in Shanghai. Outside of Shanghai, the rate exceeded 71%. In total, 15,767 student visas were issued by the Shanghai Consulate in 2007, an increase of 40% from 2006.

Recruitment Event Schedule and Attendance

Event hours on Sunday were from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This intentionally smaller scale event specifically targeted pre-registered students to interact with the U.S. school representatives, but after word got out more people came than had been expected.

The number of pre-event and onsite registrations was around 427, with total visitor attendance estimated at 813.

Student Tracking System

Online pre-event registration was offered by AIEF to visitors of the Shanghai event. Students who visited the event were encouraged to register their educational goals and contact information in AIEF’s student tracking system. AIEF pioneered this online system in 2001, and has offered the database as a service exclusively to U.S. schools since 2002. AIEF’s emphasis on service, quality, and integrity explains why its current database has an accumulated membership of nearly 6,000 student names. On April 15, 2008, participating U.S. schools received a list of the student contacts that consulted with them at the event.

Special Visit to the USCampus Center in Shanghai

On the morning of Monday, April 7, the participating U.S. school representatives were escorted by bus to visit AIEF’s UScampus Center in Shanghai. At 11:00 AM, Mr. Jeff Chank, Center Director, offered a briefing during which he introduced the Center’s resources, including a fully computerized testing center, a library, counseling rooms, and video interviewing services.

Refreshments were provided during the visit. A special treat for the visiting U.S. school representatives was an invitation to write their institutions’ names, sign their own names, and write messages on the Center’s wall as a record of their visit. Some of the school representatives sat for a demo USAT test, a 90-minute English proficiency assessment designed by AIEF.

Several groups of students were assembled at the Center to meet face to face with the U.S. school representatives, including students currently applying to study in the USA, student ambassadors from various Chinese campuses, and students who received counseling from the UScampus Center and have already been placed at a U.S. educational institution.

Following the visit, in the early afternoon UScampus Center staff accompanied the U.S. school representatives on a Shanghai City tour organized by AIEF.
