2010 Summer Northeastern China Post-Event Report

Report Topics:

Recent Developments in Northeastern China

Earlier this year, the decision was made by the US government to consolidate and assign all EducationUSA services in China to one location, the American Center for Educational Exchange (ACEE) operated by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. In addition, owing to the extremely busy visa interview situation in China during the summer, the originally scheduled student seminars on visa preparation by U.S. consular officers were canceled this year for AIEF’s Shenyang event.

For the past three years, Northeastern China has undergone rapid development in all categories, including educational exchange. This is especially true in the cities of Shenyang and Dalian. In the past, the majority of students from this region have been going to the United States to study at the graduate level; recently, robust growth has been seen in the number of Chinese students pursuing undergraduate and high school studies.

Fair Venues & Attendance

In 2010, AIEF expanded its Summer American Education Fair in China to cover Shenyang, Anshan and Dalian, the three major cities in Northeastern China. These fairs were hosted by the Commission of Liaoning International Education Exchange (CLIEE). This is the first time AIEF has participated in the CLIEE events.

The Shenyang American Education Fair was held from July 17-19, 2010, at the Shenyang Science Centrum Exhibition Center. Approximately 980 visitors attended the multinational education expo in Shenyang.

The Anshan fair was held from July 21-22, 2010 at the Anshan Silong Jingzijie Plaza. The venue is located on the ground floor of a shopping plaza that is surrounded by shops. As such, there were many visitors to the plaza; however, the estimated number of visitors to the American Education Pavilion was around 280 that showed interest in American education. The fair attendance may be improved if the fair hours are scheduled in the evening rather than during the daytime school hours.

The Dalian Fair was held from July 24-25, 2010 at the Dalian Xinghai Convention & Exhibition Center. The venue is located in a large exhibition complex, with a few other exhibitions taking place concurrently. The American Education Pavilion attracted around 2,800 visitors with a high level of interest in U.S. education.

From the three events at Shenyang, Anshan, and Dalian, there were a total of 342 student registrations collected at the AIEF booth. These data will be verified by AIEF for accuracy and validity before sending the list of names and contact information to US school participants.

Based on the much-appreciated input that we have received from our fair participants, AIEF will review and evaluate the situation with the organizers and make a decision accordingly for our future involvement at the events in Northeastern China.
